The most sustainable metre of fabric is the one you never waste.

PatternAI is a design tool, so we’re honest about where we help: before a single metre is cut. Tighter markers, fewer physical samples, right-first-time files, and production that matches demand.

One marker, packed tight — almost no offcut

The waste is upstream.

Most of fashion’s material waste is decided before production even starts — at the cutting table and in how much gets made.

  • 10–15%of fabric is lost on the cutting-room floor in conventional cut-and-sew. UCSB Bren, 2024
  • ~70%of a garment’s cost is the fabric itself — so every offcut is money, not just material. UCSB Bren
  • 30–40%of fashion collections are over-produced. McKinsey
  • −36%the drop in how many times a garment is worn before it’s discarded. Ellen MacArthur Foundation

Four places we help.

Not vague pledges — the specific, upstream points where a design tool moves the number.

  • Tighter markers

Our nesting packs pattern pieces closer across the width, so less fabric ends up on the cutting-room floor — the single largest source of pre-consumer waste.

  • Digital sampling

Design, refine and verify on screen before cloth is cut, so fewer physical samples are sewn just to be corrected and thrown away.

  • Right-first-time files

We write the machine’s native file directly and check it against its real format before it leaves — fewer reruns, misprints and mis-stitches wasting fabric and thread.

  • Made to order, not to landfill

When one design becomes a machine file in minutes, short and on-demand runs get affordable — so less is over-produced and left unsold.

What we can — and can’t — claim.

We won’t overclaim. PatternAI doesn’t run a mill’s boilers or a dye house — the energy and chemistry of production aren’t ours to fix, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we move is upstream: how much fabric is wasted in the cut, how many samples are sewn, and how much gets over-produced. That’s a real lever, and it’s the one we pull. No net-zero badge — just the parts we genuinely change.
